To a New Beginning

Plant Lovers,

I would like to welcome you to a new space I'm working on creating.  This will be the First Blog I have ever done.  We can grow and learn together :)  I would like to use this space to document my journey through the Jungle of life.  So on this page i will mostly be dealing with plant related topics but i will throw in some twists from time to time to keep it interesting.

  4. Hi, Bill, I have been watching your YouTube videos about amaryllis. Mine were disappointing this year. One did bloom pitifully; the other has only very long lovely green leaves. They both came from the big W store we love to hate but always seem to end up there, especially living in a tiny town as I do and all the grocery stores have gone away except that one. The "soil" came in the box with pot and bulb--coir I believe it is called. Add water, wait awhile and it expands greatly. I promise I followed directions for planting. I have cut the flower off as one of your videos directed. Are these things worth keeping? Any suggestions would be appreciated. About the same things occurred with the paperwhites-one bloom and tall foliage. Thanks. Glad you have started your blog and wish you good luck with it.

    1. Hi Cissy,

Sorry to hear that you experience with Amaryllis was not a great one.. sadly it happens from time to time. i think you've done everything right. Yes, i feel that this bulb is worth saving. The leaves look like hell but if you have a room that has light that you don't have to look at the plant when it's not in flowerthat's where i would grow it. i put mine to the side of my house in the spring and summer beside my hose. that way i don't see them in my yard but i remember to water them..lol..
Paperwhites should work the same way as Amaryllis.. they also don't need chilling.. rather just a dormancy period as well.. I found a link that might help you with the stretching plants.. Please note that i have not tried this.. but rather think it's interresting Here's the link. http://gardening.about.com/od/forcingandprechilling/qt/PaperWhites_Alc.htm

Good luck and let me know how it works out for you :)

    1. Sure,

I will go and buy a phalanopsis orchid soon so that i can take photo's and then i will write about growing it... If you can grow african Violets you can grow Phalanopsis (Moth Orchid) they are wonderful plants. many years ago i had a Phal that bloomed for almost 2 years constant. the only reason it stopped was that i got bored with it..lol.. orchids are very easy to grow. they are just a little different. Stay Tuned :)

  6. oh I totally forgot about african violets, years ago I had some..will have to look for some again. The reason I asked about low light orchids is because I don't have much natural light in the house :( absolutely will stay tuned!
